Is mulberry good firewood? Any special concerns?

Postby lancelot » Wed Nov 11, 2009 6:27 pm

I have a "weed tree" in my yard that I need to have removed. It is a mulberry tree.

I don't use my indoor fireplace, but I have an outdoor firepit, and I'm always glad to have free firewood. I'm thinking of having a tree service cut down the tree and leave it for me to cut up and split for next year's firewood. However, I've seen conflicting opinions on the internet about how good mulberry is for burning. I've seen opinions all the way from "excellent" to "worthless", and I wonder if it's a question of handling it properly.

Have you had any positive or negative experiences with this particular type of wood? Anything special I need to know about splitting and seasoning it? In your experience, does it burn easily, give off a lot of heat, leave much ash, etc. etc.? Any info you feel would be helpful is welcome.

Since you are burning it outside, who cares? We have burnt all kinds of wood and they all burn if the fire gets hot enough. Split it and season for a year. What you might here is that certain wood should not be burned in an indoor fireplace because of the build up in the chimney which could cause a fire. Outside is no problem. Good luck.

It would be excellent if you kept it alive because then you could have berries around the fire!

I have 3 of them and they're not weeds they're great trees! I wonder if the people who found the wood worthless failed to keep it properly stored or stored it too long?

Oh well good luck.

Some people like to burn the mulberry bush early in the morning. :)
