Were is the best place to stack firewood?

I have only a few options to place wood, I want the best suited place, but out of the way, but not so far out of the way that it is an inconvenience to get to, but yet, I have two small boys who I am sure will try to climb the stack.

My yard is a slopped, highest part is at the back yard fence line, the backyard holds water about 6 feet or so from the house after rain. Thanks to the good ole Texas Clay, we will be fighting this for ever. I can try stacking at these locations:

1. At the back fence line (top of the hill) then have to waddle through standing water if it had rained any in the prior week.

2. Behind the shed, That area will get more muddy than standing water, but to get to it I will still have to go through standing water to get it.

3. On my back porch, on a concrete patio, covered, It would be leaning up against two walls, but the kids toys are stored in a huge plastic storage bin, I am sure there will be many bugs, snakes and other critters in there toy box as well as get into the house, if I put that up next to the wood.

4. The last place would be to sit in standing water, about 6 inches with this last rain, and stack it right up against the house, but then again, the critters will more than likely find accesses in to the house.

Another question, what can I use to stack the wood on, my husband thinks he will make something to stack it on from left over pine wood boards in our garage, I am thinking if we randomly scatter bricks so there is enough air flow and to keep it off the ground would be a better choice. Or should we just stack it directly on the ground where ever we stack it at? I am not wanting to spend any money on a wood holder or anything of that nature, I want to use items we already have. I do also have metal fence post (the kind you attach with chicken wire type fencing, 6 ft. tall) that I can use to anchor down the ends to help with stability issues.

From your description of choices I believe I would stack it on the concrete. Most bugs and snakes aren't that active in the winter time. If you put it anywhere else it absolutely needs to be up off the ground. Even on the concrete a bit of air flow under it would be good. A combination of your bricks and scrap lumber would make a nice rack to keep the wood from rotting by being in contact with the ground.

I think. You should...

Probaly put the wood behind the shed.
But to avoid the muddy water, I think you should install drains and dig out an underground tubing system. My dad did this to avoid flooding on his front pathway to the porch. It works GREAT!!

Depending on how fast you will consume the wood you should consider termites getting to it. Because of them, don't stack it next to the house. Even a couple feet away from any building would work. So, when laying down the bricks use some mortar between them. Cover the wood with a plastic tarp that you can tie to the stakes you have. You want to keep the wood dry. If you have enough bricks, lay down a path for the kids. Even gravel would be better than walking in the mud.

Next, install drain pipes in the yard to get rid of the standing water....

Critters like to hide so set the wood pile such that they can't get behind or under it.
