What is the best wood for burning in a wood stove?

Some modern wood burning units now incorporate a catalytic device which apparently serves to lessen undesirable emissions. What is the best firewood for these and or any wood burning system?

Assume a north/North American location.

Free wood; downed trees, pallets, slab wood, 2x4 ends (as long as not pressure treated).... Probably not good for the catalytic device, but good enough for an older stove.

The best wood is wood that cannot be used for a better purpose. Walnut has a very nice flame with a lot of heat per log but if I were to cut one of my walnut trees down I would sell it for furniture.

All hard woods are best, oak, cherry, or birch. As far as emissions, make sure the wood is fully dried and clean of any chemical residue.
