My step-mother made a table for all the kids, so that every day of the week we had a specific chore to do:
kitchen (clean all dishes from anyone doing anything in the kitchen, tidy up, set the dinner table, clean up after dinner, sweep floor, wipe counters, organize messes, leave in perfect state for next day)
laundry (do the days laundry for 6 kids and 2 adults)
dusting (dust specific rooms in the house)
vacuum (vacuum either upstairs or downstairs of house, including living room that was off-limit to us kids, all nooks)
bathrooms (clean 3 bathrooms - toilets, counters, floor, mirrors, etc.)
baking (bake a batch of something like cookies or muffins)
Those were the regular chores. On top of that we had seasonal chores such as going to a local farm for strawberry picking or a bush for blackberry picking, chopping firewood, keeping fires going through winter, washing cars, of course cleaning our own rooms, etc.)
Allowance was $1.50 Canadian every two weeks in the 1980's. Over a year, maybe we got about 10% of that money as our own spending money because the rest had to go to school supplies and buying gifts for the multitude of birthdays in an 8-person home, along with xmas presents for family and step-family.
