Why does firewood need to be chopped?

Seems like you can just put the whole log in there.

to fit into the fireplace.... duh.... lol

Seriously though, if you have many smaller pieces of wood, then you can add more rather than having it all burn at once and the fire would last longer.

Yeah, I used to ask my father that. He would usually mutter something that sounded like "ungratefulbasdoyurchores" And then he would slap me in the head.
I chopped firewood so my ears would not be swollen and ringing.

If I were you, I would just chop the damned firewood.

Seems like I remember my dad saying it would dry and burn better chopped, but it was hard to tell with my ears all swollen up.

I use both split and un split fire wood in my pot belly stove. The split wood dried out faster that the un split. I usually throw about two un split logs on the fire before going to bed and they usually last most of the night. At Christmas time I save several long logs to put on the fire, I call them Yule logs and they seem to burn forever. Chopped or split wood dries out faster and gives more heat as they burn better.

Well for one thing, it's easier to shove smaller chopped chunks into a wood burning stove than it is to shove in a log.

You couldn't put a piece of oak 18 inches in diameter into a fireplace. I would have trouble lifting it.

The split edges make the wood catch and burn evenly
